“Weird Al” Homage to Transformers Wreck Gar & My Little Pony Cheese Sandwich – Botcon 2014

Although I’ve been going to Botcon since 2000 this was the first year I had a table in Artist Alley. It was a fantastic experience that resulted in making a lot of new friends with both fans and professionals.

I had a bunch of new prints including my homage to “Weird Al” Yankovic featuring his Transformers Animated character Wreck Gar and his My Little Pony Cheese Sandwich!

Gummy’s Yummies! – My Little Pony Pets

With the one exception of the owl, I have had pets of all these critters. Yes, even an alligator! (Long story!) Originally I was going to do a pinup of Pinkie Pie and her silly pet gator Gummy, but being an animal lover I decided to do a group portrait of all the ponies’ pets. Counter clockwise: Winona, Angel, Owlowiscious, Opalescence‎, Gummy and of course Tank.my_little_pony_pets_gummy_Opal_comic_book_art

Here is the original sketch with Pinkie Pie, the pencils and the inked page.

See? I told you I had a pet alligator.

Here’s me with Spot.

Unlike Gummy, Spot had teeth!

Just Another Day on Sweet Apple Acres – My Little Pony

Applejack is taking the rest of the family for a nice, peaceful ride in the country.

Unlike in math class, I like to show my work.

1. This is the initial sketch. Usually these sketches are nothing more than scribbles to help me visualize the idea. This is one of the better ones. Often they are comprised of stick figures, notes and randomness.

2.Then my first attempt at the pencils. I realized that Applejack wasn’t as dynamic as I wanted her. Also, she doesn’t fill the page and the design has no “flow” to it.

3. That led me to redo the pencils. Here I made her bigger so she looks like she’s running off the page. She’s also lower than the cart which divides the page and adds some depth to it.

4. Lastly, the inked page.

Spike vs. The Diamond Dogs – My Little Pony

I have a lot of My Little Pony stuff, don’t I? Hmm… Next post I will do something slightly more serious. …Slightly! Until then, here’s Spike defending the honor of his beloved Rarity from the dreaded Diamond Dogs. I know, Rarity can take care of herself. But it never hurts to have a dragon on your side.

This is sorta my process: 1) I sketch out the idea on whatever scrap paper I have laying around. 2) I pencil it. I usually pencil on cheap copy paper. You can see I used two pieces taped together here. 3) Using a light box I ink the pencils onto a standard comic board. 4) If crayons and finger paint aren’t readily available, I scan and digitally color the image. So simple, even a Diamond Dog can do it!

Your question is, “Why don’t you just pencil directly on the comic board and cut out the use of the light box?”

To quote boy genius Master Billy Quizboy, “That’s an excellent question. …I have no idea.”

Unicron Sketch for a Transformers Fan!

Oh this is fun! A Transformers fan connected me and asked me to sign his copy of The AllSpark Almanac for him via the US Postal Service. He asked if I could include a sketch of my interpretation of Unicron. So I sent him this:

He then posted this great video of him receiving the sketch. Thanks Zeltrax Millenium for the super vid! (Transformers folk always have the best names!)
